Preventing

--HOW TO PREVENT--

  • Use your cell phone for emergency situations only. While you're driving, a cell phone should only be used for emergency purposes.

  • Social conversations on cell phones should not be carried on while driving. Remember, it's against the law in a growing number of states. You could be ticketed and fined.

  • If you are drowsy, pull off the road. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash by nearly four percent.

  • You should limit the number of passengers, as well as the level of activity inside the car.

  • Avoid eating while driving. Being busy is no excuse for distracted driving.

  • Do your multi-tasking outside the car.

--WHY YOU SHOULD PREVENT--

  • 3 different types of distracted driving

    • visual- stop watching the road

    • manual- removing hands off the wheel (losing control)

    • cognitive-  stop paying attention

  • In one study that surveyed 198 teen drivers, researchers found that those teens most likely to drive with multiple passengers were “thrill-seekers” who didn’t accurately perceive the risks inherent in driving and suspect that their parents are not monitoring their behavior.
